New Economy, New Attitude.....

Since today was payday for both my hubby and I, and it is the Friday before Mother's Day, after I dropped the Wild Man off at school, I headed toward our nearest town for a little bit of shopping. Not too many stores are open before 8:00, so my choices were limited. I needed to find some outdoor things, so I headed to Lowe's.

As I took a shortcut to the store, I passed one of several hotel construction sites. This sign was sitting on the side of the road:

I had never seen a sign like this, so it got me to thinking.

Scary thought, I know.

Since they actually had to post a sign, it is obvious there was a need for it to be there. I wondered how many out-of-work people were coming through there every day, trying to find employment?

5? 10? 50?

There had been so many people looking for work over the past few days (weeks? months?), they actually had to put up a sign.

That made me feel really sad, scared, depressed.....but most of all THANKFUL!

Yes, Thankful....thankful that Hubby and I BOTH have great jobs!

This has been a wake-up call for me.

Last night, as Marty drug in from work at 10:00 pm, after leaving the house at 6:00 am earlier that morning, I was so frustrated at his seemingly endless nights of overtime. He already has had 30 hours of overtime during this week alone. We aren't able to plan, eat supper together, spend our evenings together....but you know what?

He has a job that provides for us, allows us to live in this house, and allows me to work 2 days a week.

And for that I am thankful!

Every Tuesday and Wednesday morning as my alarm goes at 4:45 am, and I drag my sleepy little boy to his Nana's house, and then make that 90 mile journey to work, I fuss and groan and gripe and complain. "WHY am I doing this?" I ask myself.

You know why? Because God has blessed me with a good job, decent money, and great co-workers.

And for that, I am thankful!

And to make me even more thankful for my job, I received this on Nurses' Day:

Pretty cool, huh?

The thing was, I didn't even realize it was Nurse's Day. Needless to say, this was a pleasant surprise (as was the money tucked into the card).

So, the next time you "see" me fussin' and complaining about my job or my hubby's job.....remind me to be thankful!

Well, off to the ball field in just a little bit. Jameson has a second "date".

  1. You are so right, we all have to be thankful that there are jobs, food and homes to live in. When you see so many that are loosing everything they have worked so hard for, it puts a whole new perspective to things. It is wonderful that you are recognized for your hard work and dedications. Congratulations. I'm sure you deserve it. Hugs, Marty

  2. robin, We all do need to be reminded how lucky we are and how nice we have it from time to time. I was telling my husband that I had to meet a client last night and go to a meeting this morning and then meet more people at the showroom Saturday morning, and he said, I would trade you in a second, and I was like thanks but no thanks, I like working only 20 or so hours a week. We who are all working are very blessed! Thanks for the reminder! Tell Jameson to have a good time on his date, lol. Sue PS Happy Mother Day to you!

  3. Oh gosh I forgot to congratulate you on that sweet letter and tell you happy belated Nurses Day! Sue

  4. AMEN Robin! During these times as I complain about my job, I stop to think and am so greatful that my husband and I both have jobs! Thanks for reminding me again!

    Lou Cinda :)

  5. I bet you're the bestest nurse evah!!! You go, girl. congrats!

  6. awesome post!!! awesome letter!!!!i'm sure you are very deserving of it.its a gift to be able to work with a great bunch of people..
thanks for let me know how lucky i'm.
now i feel bad for buying a new mirror i should be saving my money,it is very scary out there lol.happy mothers day my friend i wish you a great day...

  7. I had to remind myself to be grateful that Eddie has a job when they were making him work every shift.
What a great thing to see when you go to work! You are such a blessings to everyone Robin!

  8. What a wonderful note, and what an honor to be told that what you are doing matters to others and that you're inspiring others to do their jobs better too! You must be one heck of a nurse! Oh, that sign does make you wonder. laurie

  9. Thankful. That's exactly the right attitude. Thankful in my home as well. Hubby's job had benefit cutbacks, but we still have a comfortable income coming in to support us. Thankful We have great health insurance. Thankful. We have a home filled with love. Thankful. My "fun money" is certainly cut way back but I'm happy and healthy. Thankful. Thanks for reminding us all that we need to be thankful! Robin you are just the sweetest!!

  10. One thing about farming, nobody can fire you! But then you have to worry about commodity prices, which are ridiculous low cause of the economy now!

  11. Great post Robin. It does help to stop and think of the things we have to be thankful for, rather than the things we "can't" have. That sign is scary though. Makes me wonder why we can't find anyone who wants to work - they want a job, but they don't want to "work" if you know what I mean. Maybe the economy hasn't taken as much of a hit in our area, I don't know. Congratulations on your recognition - darlin, if you ever want to move to Texas I would hire you in a heartbeat!! How fun would that be. Hugs, Kathy (Oh and don't forget to let us know how Wild Man's second date went!)

  12. Robin - I think we all get that way from time to time. I was paying bills at the office yesterday, and grumbling and bitching and complaining. Bill was at the office doing some "man chores" for me when he gently reminded me the same thing. I had a successful business and money to pay bills. I thnk in the hustle and bustle of life, we do tend to forget to be thankful.

This was a lovely post. We all need a reminder or two every now and then.

Bless you dear friend - and congrats on the special recognition as I'm sure you are super deserving. Ball Field sounds HOT!!! :-)

    Hugs, Barb

  13. Robin, congrats on your awesome Nurse's Day note!!!! YOU GO GIRL!!! =)

    On another good note:
You would never know the economy was bad if you went to our outlet mall today... the "line of people waiting to get in" the Coach handbag store was LONG, and once we finally got in, people were buying Coach handbags and accessories like crazy! Those registers were ringing up sales like crazy! Good sign! :)

  14. Lowe's was just as bad today! I thought I would go nuts until I got out of there. The parking lot was FULL and the plant section was PACKED with people! Who knew someplace like Lowe's would be the hot spot for Mother's Day gifts? (even though that's where mine came from)

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment on my blog! It really means a lot to me!!
