An Unusual, But Very Cool, New Trend!

Have any of you out there in blog land, heard of the unusual new trend called

"Trash the Dress"?

According to Wikipedia:

Trash the dress, fearless bridal, and rock the frock refers to photography that contrasts elegant clothing with an environment in which it is completely out of place. It is generally shot in the style of glossy beauty and glamour photography.
Usually brides decide to have pictures taken on the beach, but possibilities are endless. City streets, rooftops, garbage dumps, fields, and abandoned buildings are only few examples of trash the dress session locations.
A model often wears a
ball gown, prom dress or wedding dress[2], and may effectively ruin the dress in the process by getting it wet, dirty or in extreme circumstances tearing or destroying the garment.
It may also be done as an additional shoot after the wedding, almost as a declaration that the wedding is done and the dress will not be used again. It is seen as an alternative to storing the dress away, never to be seen again.

So, basically, Trash the Dress photos are pictures of a Bride (or prom attendee, or bridesmaid....anyone who would have a fancy dress) "trashing" their dresses.

It doesn't necessarily mean that the dress wearers are deliberately trying to destroy their dress, but they are being photographed in their dress, in places that they would NEVER go before the wedding. Places range from the beach, desert, ranch, farm, downtown....anywhere....you name it. In the process of taking the photos, the dress can become wet, dirty, torn, or even destroyed.

Some brides decide to do these photos right after the wedding, some people wait until years later....and some brides wait until the divorce papers are ready....EEEEKKKKK!

Here are some really beautiful examples I have found:

This photo (above) is from a FANTASTIC local photographer, MaddieBug Photography. Gotta love those PINK HEELS!

Now this next photo, is a little extreme, even for me. But I think the Bride married a fireman...thus, the fire!

Now, I'm not really sure how I feel about doing this. If you would have shown me this before or even right after I got married, I would have told you that I thought you were INSANE! NO WAY would I trash my expensive, beautiful dress just for some pictures.

BUT, now, 21 years later, I think it is actually pretty cool! Especially since my own dress was destroyed when my parent's house burned down 5 years ago (as was my mother's and sister's wedding dresses).

So, my dear bloggie buddies....what do you think about "Trash the Dress"?

AND, where is YOUR wedding dress now? (If you had one, that is).

Oh, and be ready for a little change coming sometime this week!

  1. My wedding dress is in a box in my closet. My daddy packed it in that box, so no telling what it looks like 35 years later. My sister did wear it after I did, so it got used twice, and I only paid $100 for it. Got it at Tiche's Department Store in Dallas.

  4. OMG Robin- this is SO funny that you did this now!! I'm at my parents' house in Montana, and my wedding gown is here, and there's an old truck down the road, and I was just thinking about having Allie wear my gown and sit on that truck so I can get a picture!! Unbelievable!!! And I thought I had such a clever idea!!!!!!

  5. I love the pics of the girls "trashing their dress" I just don't think I could do it though. If I could keep my dress from being "trashed" and still have the cool pics then I would do it. Like the pics on top of old cars or like my cousins new bride just did a few weeks ago, she posed on top of a bail of hay in her wedding dress.

After our wedding in 1998 I had my wedding dress framed in a shadow box. The shadow box is about 6 inches deep, six feet tall, and 3 feet wide. It now hangs in my foyer. Is there a way for me to post a link to a picture of my framed wedding dress in the comments section? I would love to share with you all how beautiful this "art" is and how happy it makes me to see it hanging on my wall and not taking up space in a closet. In a box or bag, never to be seen again.

I am so sorry your parent's house burned. I can not imagine the feeling one has when your belongings are destroyed.

Can't wait to see what changes are coming.

    Love ya!

  7. Robin: I do love these photos! Especially the one on the pickup truck! I had a friend who wore red heels when she got married and I loved'em!! Looked so great in photos!

I gave my dress to Goodwill about 2 years after I married my Knight in shining Armour, Steve....

I hope it brought someone else a fairytale ending too....

  8. I think it sounds like fun, but I'm not sure I would have done it right after the wedding. I loved my dress so much that I didn't want anything to happen to it. But not it is stuffed in a closets at my mom's and I can't even fit in it anymore. I don't think I will EVER be that size again....I like to eat too much. ha.

  10. Hey Robin,
Thank you so much for your sweet comments. I am so excited because I can read your blog again. I guess the new background did the trick. I have had a lot of reading to catch up on. I was having withdrawls :) Love you girl, and I love the pictures. My dress is just hanging in the closet at my parents house not even protected in a box. If I could fit in it, then I would probably do something like that.

    Love,
